Why are the far right doing so well? And can it be stopped?
Summarised with Bite · 18 min read
Gary Stevenson argues the far right is winning across the Western world because they're the only political force offering a clear explanation for falling living standards: inequality. Unless the centre and left unite around taxing wealth to stop this decline, he predicts the far right will continue its electoral sweep.

The Collapse That Was Predicted
On Tuesday, May 12th, Gary filmed this knowing Sunday might bring Keir Starmer's resignation. Labour had just been crushed in local elections, losing seats to both the Greens on the left and Reform (the UK's far-right party) on the right. The centre had imploded. Gary wasn't surprised. He'd predicted this collapse years ago, even before Labour took power, because he saw a structural problem no one was addressing: living standards have been falling for nearly 20 years. This isn't a UK phenomenon. The same pattern is playing out in France, Germany, Italy, and the US, where the far right already holds power. The reason is simple, Gary argues. Only one political group is answering the question ordinary people are asking: "Why are my living standards falling, and what are you going to do about it?" That group is the far right. And until someone else offers a clear, competing answer, they'll keep winning. Gary poses a test: go out on the street and ask someone what Labour's explanation is for falling living standards. Or ask what the Democrats' explanation is in the US. He believes fewer than one in ten people could answer. Meanwhile, Reform's message is crystal clear, even if it's funded by billionaires and will only make inequality worse. The centre and left have no unified counter-narrative, and that silence is fatal.
