CNN was not the original source. It got its information from a WWF report, and the WWF got it from a study commissioned from researchers at the University of Newcastle in Australia. That original study did not say people definitely eat a credit card of plastic every week. It gave a range, from 0.1 grams up to 5 grams. The WWF then highlighted only the top end, saying, “An average person could be ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic per week.” Hank’s comparison is funny because it is painfully accurate: “I could save you up to 15 percent or more on your car insurance.” As he points out, “That’s all of the percents!” That joke carries the real lesson. Different publications have different goals. The WWF is an advocacy group trying to protect nature, so it has an incentive to make the microplastics issue feel urgent. A news outlet has its own incentive, clicks. “You might eat between a tenth of a gram and 5 grams” is more accurate, but it is not nearly as clickable as “you’re eating a credit card.” So the science did not necessarily become false, but it did become narrower, sharper, and more dramatic as it traveled. Hank then gives names to the layers. The Newcastle study is the primary source, the firsthand account from the scientists who did the work. The WWF report is a secondary source, because it rewrote the findings. The CNN article is a tertiary source, summarizing the summaries. Once you see that chain, the bigger point lands: distortion can happen accidentally, which is misinformation, or deliberately, which is disinformation. Either way, the safest habit is not blind trust or total cynicism. It is learning to inspect the path a claim took before it reached you.
